Second night in a row of peaceful protest focused on Black lives. My daughter was there last night, and as a mother you always worry, but I knew it was safer now that the feds are gone. And that did kind of stop me for a moment: we are safer, now that law enforcement is gone. Not something White people have to think about too often in their daily experience. I think the message of fighting for Black lives might have gotten a bit lost in the melee and media coverage of Trump’s campaign stunt, but I’m hopeful that the experience of being, or even just seeing people targeted and abused by law enforcement in this manner will create even more empathy for what BIPOC have experienced, and create even more urgency to transform community safety into something worthy of this struggle. Keep going Portland.
